Nestled on Fulton Street, this restaurant is steps away from the busy street where diners can indulge in Caribbean soul cooking at it's best.

Diners know Brooklyn restaurants for their intimate appeal. The menus offer simple and clean flavored dishes that everyone can pronounce. Fort Greene’s Brooklyn Moon is no exception. This is a friendly neighborhood restaurant located on the busy Fulton Street. The Caribbean infused soul-cooking menu is a delight to the diners.

The décor features deeply rich red and purple hues on the wall’s tapestry. The huge dingy velvet curtains makes the mind wonder as to what might be hiding behind them. The space is relatively small with a modest sized bar next to the kitchen. One doesn’t typically talk about the bathroom in a dining experience, but Brooklyn Moon’s unisex bathroom is an art experience. The color scheme transports the visitor to another place of pink swirls and fresh gardenia scents.

Check out the $5 "Anti-Bush" Menu

The restaurant is known for the $5 “Anti-Bush Menu.” Diners can choose one entrée and a side. Entrees on this list include a moist salmon burger, a grilled vegetable wrap with goat cheese and fried whiting. The owner Michael Thompson conceived the menu in an effort to raise the spirits of his patrons after the September 11 attacks. The menu’s title is unchanged even though there is a new president in the Oval Office.

The star of the appetizers is the “cat eyes” or fried sweet plantains wrapped with turkey bacon. The sweet and salty mix made for and innovative taste. The rum punch was tall and generous and, unlike many of it’s imitators, not too sweet or over-iced.

The dinner menu features the “Big Fish” ($14.00) with an almond crust, stuffed with garlic- roasted potatoes and grilled vegetables. This hearty, robust meal is quite the fix for strong hunger pangs. The trout was de-boned and baked to release the aroma of the garlic infused potatoes. The green apple salad is a simple blend of julienne Granny Smith apples over a bed a field green with honey-mustard vinaigrette. The tart, sweet and crunchy texture of the salad paired well with savory fish flavors.

Brooklyn Moon Cafe Serves Terrific Jerk Chicken

The typical Caribbean dish of jerk chicken and peas and rice ($12.00) leaves experienced diners nodding in approval. “It’s just a typical Sunday dinner back home. And this dish does comes close,” smiles diner, Tracy Gibson. The rice is cooked with coconut milk that gives it an earthy flavor, while the chicken’s charred exterior foils the moistness of the meat when cut.

The familiar appeal of the patrons and staff is an indicator that this restaurant is a fixture in this community and with prices like this coupled with hearty portions of well seasoned food, it is not hard to figure out why.
